March 2009
METRO's newly approved contract with Parsons Transportation Group to build light rail includes plans for the Uptown light rail project. Uptown is one of the four rail alignments covered in this historic agreement which opens the door for construction activities to begin. In terms of timing, the East End, North and Southeast corridors are further along in development, therefore work will be seen in those areas ahead of Uptown.  Additionally, in terms of interconnectivity, the Uptown alignment is linked to the University corridor which also lags behind the others. However, in the Parsons contract, the METRO Board allocated $3 million of the initial funds for the Uptown project.

September 2008
METRO is pleased to announce that engineering work on the Uptown Light-Rail Corridor is 65 percent complete!  METRO President & CEO, Frank J. Wilson, recently presented project updates at the Galleria Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. Highlights are detailed in the latest Uptown Corridor METRORail News.

METRO is working out an agreement with the Uptown Authority/TIRZ to partner in the construction of a segment of the Uptown Light-Rail Line. Additionally, the Uptown District has been actively engaged with METRO in planning design concepts and implementation.

August 2007 - March 2008
Uptown merchants were surveyed to assess their business activities and operations. This information will be used to alleviate potential impacts throughout construction, such as assuring unimpaired customer access to businesses.

October - November 2007
What better venue could there be than the Arboretum in Memorial Park to hold the Uptown Community Visioning panel for the Uptown Corridor portion of the Arts in Transit Program. In October, members of the committee included enthusiastic residents and business representatives who offered comments and suggestions for imagery appropriate to the alignment. Then, on November 1, 2007 the panel reconvened to make final selection of the artists for the Uptown rail stations. In March 2008, the public was invited to an Open House at the Hilton Houston Post Oak to view and comment on the artist's proposals. The artist's were on hand to answer questions and receive feedback.

The artists selected are:

Post Oak Stations: Alan Krathaus/ Fiona McGettigan and Roberto Cervantes (Suzanne Sellers is the alternate)

Memorial Station: Dixie Friend Gay (Ann Stautburg is the alternate)

Northwest Transit Center: Bill Davenport (Bill and Mary Buchen/SonArc is the alternate)

October 2007

At the October meeting, METRO's Board of Directors unanimously adopted light-rail technology for the North, East End, Southeast, and Uptown corridors.  These four corridors had previously been planned to begin with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) technology as an interim step towards Light Rail Transit (LRT).  Read the news release for more details.

June 2006

An Open House took place on Wednesday, June 14, 2006.
