METRO Board approves first phase construction contract METRO's Board of Directors approved on Tuesday (May 8) a contract for the design and early construction of four rapid transit lines and Houston's first modern Intermodal Terminal. With this action, Washington Group Transit Management Company (WGTMC) becomes the Facility Provider or prime contractor of this project. The $77.3 million contract is expected to trigger a ripple effect in the local economy. The agreement covers an eight-moth period, the first phase of the Facility Provider's responsibilities in the construction of the North, East End, Southeast, and Uptown corridors as well as the Intermodal Terminal. During Phase 1, METRO and WGTMC will discuss the possible addition of services relating to the University Corridor and Wheeler Intermodal Terminal to the contract. This addition would be considered to maximize technical, managerial, and financial arrangements. Groundbreaking (to mark early construction activities) is expected this summer. A Phase 2 or Final Design and Construction contract is expected to be awarded in early 2008. |
