METRO has developed commuter rail options for key corridors, and a long range study that may reveal other potential options. Evaluations for success include cost effectiveness and efficient multi modal connectivity.
The 90A commuter line has so far received the most detailed investigation, and the pursuit of federal funds to advance the project has begun through the New Starts Program. Commuter rail is a regional transportation project, and METRO is coordinating with agencies such as TxDOT, HGAC, The City of Houston, HECTRA, Harris County, the Gulf Coast Freight Rail District, and the UP Railroad. These efforts are expected to create a dynamic transit system for riders throughout Harris and the surrounding counties.
It's exciting to contemplate the possibilities, and METRO is planning ahead so that we can all be prepared for when the future becomes the present. Commuter rail is one part of Metro's efforts to be the premier regional transportation agency.
