About Downtown Segment of the Southeast Alignment
Welcome to the newest addition to the METRO light rail web pages. Here you will find updates and information that will be useful if you frequent the downtown area as a commuter, a merchant, or a resident. The downtown portion of the light rail project is part of the Southeast Line, but it was decided this area of activity needed a webpage of its own.
The downtown portion of METRO's Southeast Line began construction activities in early May. As the work progresses our Construction Updates will be posted here to provide information regarding upcoming work.
August 2010
Utility Work To Cause Closures Along Rusk
As light rail construction continues on the Downtown Line, utility work will cause intermittent closure on areas of Rusk and some side streets. To help ease traffic-flow issues, where possible, at least two lanes of traffic will remain open during street closures.
Downtown light rail utility work will include:
- Electric utility work on Rusk between Crawford and Austin (Segment 5B)
- Electric utility work on Rusk between Fannin and Caroline (Segment 5B)
- Electric utility work on La Branch between Capitol and Walker (Segment 5B)
- Electric utility work on San Jacinto from Walker to Capitol (Segment 5A/B)
- Communications utility work at the intersection of Capitol and Crawford (Segment 5A)
- Communications utility installation on Rusk from Austin to Jackson (Segment 5B)
- Communications utility work at the intersection of Texas and Live Oak (Segment 4B)
To speed the process along and minimize impact to area businesses and residences in the construction zones, utility work will be performed during daytime and nighttime hours. Nighttime work will be restricted to non-residential areas. To view the work plan map please click here.
The construction strategies we will use to minimize disruption along the way are:
- Work in phases to keep traffic flowing
- Maintain open lines of communication
- Utilize a strong community outreach program
- Publish communications, construction updates in print and electronically
- Maintain a web site with complete, current information

Once complete, the Downtown portion of the Southeast Alignment will connect residents and businesses to the East End Alignment and the Main Street Red line. The downtown segment runs a little more than a mile (from IH-45 to US-59). It starts on Nagle Street and travels west on Capital and east on Rusk. Six stations will be established - on Capital at Crawford, Fannin, and Smith Street and on Rusk there will be stations at Smith, Fannin and Crawford.
June 2010
Wednesday, June 30th METRO and HRT hosted a Downtown Stakeholder meeting at the “Shops at the Mall” in Houston Center, 1200 McKinney, Suite 413.
Jose Enriquez, Project Director for the Southeast Line gave an overall introduction to the alignment. Gary Brown Project Manager with HRT continued with an overview of what construction has taken place and what construction will occur in the next three month time frame.
Sara Kellner presented a PowerPoint explaining the Arts in Transit program and all of the downtown exhibits were on display.

An exhibit and reception was held on May 27, 2010 at the “Shops at Houston Center”, 1200 McKinney, Suite 413 to allow downtown stakeholders the opportunity to view and comment on artists renderings for the Downtown Stations. The exhibit focused on designs of art elements for the Fannin, Smith, Crawford and Downtown Transfer stations. The artists selected for these stations refined their original proposals based on previous comments received from the public.
The renderings as well as the comment forms for these three stations can be viewed here on line and will also be on display at the Houston Downtown Management District, 909 Fannin Street, Suite 1650, during office hours.
METRO Solutions invites you to view these new renderings and provide comments for the three stations from May 27, 2010 – June 14, 2010. You are invited to submit written comments that will be compiled and given to the artists so that the final artwork will reflect the esthetics of the community.

On Friday, March 26, 2010 a meeting was held with Downtown Stakeholders at the “The Houston Club”, 811 Rusk in the Coastal Suite, to present an update to the Downtown Stakeholders prior to the start of Construction on the Downtown Segment.
METRO and HRT presented an overview of the construction timeline, station renderings and answered any outstanding questions to more than 50 stakeholders.

Información Sobre el Segmento del Centro de la Alineación del Southeast
Bienvenidos al la adición mas reciente a las páginas web del tren ligero de METRO. Aquí usted encontrara actualizaciones e información que será útil si usted frecuenta el área del centro, como viajero, un comerciante, o un residente. Una vez completa la porción del Centro de la alineación Southeast unirá a residentes y negocios a la alineación de East End a la línea Roja de la calle Main. El segmento corre un poco más de una milla (de la carretera interestatal 45 a la carretera 59). Esto comienza en la calle Nagle y viaja hacia el oeste sobre la calle Capital y este sobre la calle Rusk. El miércoles 30 de junio, METRO y HRT recibieron representantes importantes de la comunidad del Centro para una junta en “Shops At Mall” en el Houston Center, localizada en 1200 McKinney, Suite 413.
José Enríquez, Director de Proyecto para la línea del Southeast dio una introducción total a la alineación. El Gerente de Proyecto Gary Brown, siguió con una descripción de la construcción que ha ocurrido y la construcción que ocurrirá en el marco de tiempo de los próximos tres meses.
Sara Kellner dio una presentación en PowerPoint explicando el programa Arts-in-Transit (Artes-en-Transporte) y todos los objetos de arte del Centro estaban en exposición. Una exposición y recepción fueron sostenidas el 27 de Mayo, 2010 en “Shops at Houston Center”, localizado en 1200 McKinney, Suite 413, para permitir que la comunidad del Centro tuviera la oportunidad de ver y comentar sobre las interpretaciones de los artistas para las estaciones del Centro. La exposición se concentro en diseños de elementos de arte para las estaciones de las calles Fannin, Smith, Crawford, y la estación de Transferencia del Centro. Los artistas seleccionados para estas estaciones refinaros sus propuestas basadas en comentarios recibidos previamente del público.
Las interpretaciones tal como los formularios de comentario para estas tres estaciones pueden ser vistas aquí en el sitio web y también estarán en exhibición en el Houston Downtown Management District, localizada en 909 calle Fannin, Suite 1650, durante el horario de oficina.
